Anti-terror bollards designed to stop terrorists using a vehicle as a weapon against crowds have been deployed in Chester city centre, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.
Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) unveiled the £1m-plus project earlier this month. Some of the security bollards will be static while others will rise out of the ground and are robust enough to stop terrorists using a vehicle as a weapon against a crowd.
A number of the static bollards have now been positioned with pictures revealing the uprights are attached to huge metal bases that are buried underground.
Work is ongoing in Northgate Street, Princess Street, near the Eastgate Clock as well as Watergate Street and Bridge Street, where at least one tiny passageway has also been blocked even though it is too narrow for vehicles to get through.
CWaC agreed and funded the £1,043,000 scheme without any formal consultation and in secret as the project is classified as sensitive. Current bollards restrict vehicle movements but would not stop a vehicle intent on an attack.
Cheshire police recommended the upgrade following vehicle ramming incidents around the world including in the capital at London Bridge, Westminster and Finsbury Park. As security increases in London, the fear is terrorists may seek out softer targets like tourist destinations.
