The Rusholme sixth-form college has asked for planning permission to deploy nine-foot high fences to stop people breaking in, a news report can reveal.
The Xaverian College argues that this access restriction solution would prevent acts of ‘minor vandalism’ that regularly affect the college, according to student support vice-principal Simon Channell.
He wrote in planning papers to Manchester town hall: “In light of recent events, the college has undertaken a review of the steps necessary to further safeguard the 2,300 young people in its care.”
As well as extending the existing walls around the site, the gates at the Crescent Range entrance would nearly double in size under the plans. The Dagenham Road entrance will also see new gates of at least 2.7 metres added, if the council approves the plans.
The college campus sits in the Victoria Park conservation area. Planning papers say that while the plans would have a minor impact on views of the heritage buildings within the campus, this would be outweighed by the benefits, which ‘ensure the future safety and security of the college campus as a whole’.
The school, which caters for 16-19 years olds currently has an ‘outstanding’ rating from Ofsted.
