The use of turnstiles in Dutch train stations has cut the number of fare dodgers 34% over the past three years, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.
According to the Dutch railway company, NS, in 2018, 230,000 people have been fined for not having a valid ticket, compared with 350,000 in 2015.
In total, 76 of the country’s railway stations are now closed off to people without a public transport card.
Furthermore, the number of reports of aggression on trains is down 27% and almost 90% of passengers now say they feel safe on the train, up from 80% in 2015.
