Local authority deploys new car park barrier to prevent overnight camping

A local council was forced to set up new barriers at its HQ’s car park after it was overrun by overnight campers, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

South Hams District Council has just set up new barriers at both entrances to the council’s Follaton House HQ in the face of concerns from dog walkers who park in the grounds to use the Arboretum public open space.

The new barriers will restrict the number of parking spaces accessible when the council HQ is closed to just eight at the entrance nearest to the arboretum.

The move has been forced on the council after it was faced with clearing up flytipped rubbish and derelict cars dumped in the grounds – on top of people using it as a camp site for their vans.

South Hams District Council installed automatic barriers to stop vehicles from accessing most of the car park areas of the 18th Century mansion house some years ago, after thieves drove in and stripped lead off the roof of the listed building.

Now new sets of barriers have been installed restricting access even further.
