Parking control measures are a must for busy hospitals

Implementing efficient and secure parking control measures is a must for every major hospital, as most such healthcare organizations are affected by significant congestion problems affecting their car parks.

This is exactly the type of situation that has led to the development of a new 270-space car park at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, which has only recently been officially inaugurated.

The new car park is located behind the main hospital building, near the helipad, and will be used for staff parking which, in turn, will further ease congestion in the main car parks for patients and visitors.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust has been working with its PFI partner to improve the availability of parking provision for everyone who uses the hospital – patients, visitors and staff alike.

In addition, work will soon begin to install pay on exit barriers on all public car parks around the hospital which will be more convenient for patients and visitors who are unsure how long they are visiting the hospital for.

Stephen Eames, chief executive at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We absolutely recognise that parking has historically been a problem at the Cumberland Infirmary with cars parked on double red lines, blocking access for emergency services. I am very pleased to say that since the introduction of parking control measures the situation has drastically improved and we are confident that the introduction of additional capacity will further improve staff, patient and visitor experience at the Cumberland Infirmary.”
