Security fencing could be installed outside a hot spot for drunks and drug-takers in Derby in an attempt to reduce the case of anti-social behaviour in the area, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.
Shop owners in the city’s St Peter’s Quarter said they have complained to police on numerous occasions about a group of people abusing them, their staff and customers.
Following the complaints, Derby City Council leader Councillor Ranjit Banwait was in the area talking to shop owners. He said he had listened to their viewpoints, along with the officer in charge of policing the area, and a plan was being made to install fences around the churchyard area.
He said: "We need to work together to find a solution. What has become obvious is the meeting point for the groups of people causing the issues is in an area just offset from the main footpath. Traders are saying they congregate in a large group and they seem to be taking and distributing legal highs. They then get the confidence to go out and cause the issues that people have been reporting."
The council planned to fence off the area in question, between the church and Sally Montague hairdressers, preventing people from gaining access and "displacing" the problem. The council representative revealed that this would then help the council and Derbyshire police to tackle the issue.
