Residents ask for barriers to be put up at former supermarket car park

product-autobarriers Residents ask for barriers to be put up at former supermarket car parkLocal residents and business owners have asked local authorities to consider installing barriers at the site of a former supermarket car park, in order to prevent it from being taken over by travellers, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

The privately-owned site of the old Somerfield off Spring Garden Road, Longton, was recently occupied by multiple caravans. As a result, local residents and business owners have asked authorities to take the necessary measures for preventing such a situation from re-occuring.

Dave Bate, owner of Cafe Continental, in Longton, would like to see barriers installed to stop travellers getting onto the land in the future.

He said: “There were travellers there a few years back so we knew something like this would happen again. That site if more or less an open invitation for travellers.

“Last time it took ages to get them off and they left a big pile of rubbish.

“It’s mainly just used as a car park, especially by parents dropping off their children at St Gregory’s. I’m not sure whether they’ll want to do that while the travellers are still there.

“I’m not sure who owns the site now. There was a compulsory purchase order on it when Asda wanted to build a supermarket.”

Residents there have also called for barriers to be installed and Stoke-on-Trent City Council confirmed it is looking at security measures at a number of sites which are regularly targeted by travellers.
