Under the new scheme, Kirklees Council will install a series of rising bollards around the town centre, limiting vehicle access to parts of Westgate, Kirkgate, Market Street and High Street a varying times of the day.

In a statement of reasons Kirklees Council says it will “help create an accessible town centre, improve the safety of pedestrians and improve the punctuality of public transport”.

The council says the bus gates will “prevent thousands of unauthorised vehicles” from entering restricted zones, adding: “These vehicles delay public transport, inconvenience shoppers and endanger pedestrians.

“The part time bus gates will use CCTV surveillance cameras to monitor authorised vehicles, including bicycles, Hackney carriages and private hire vehicles. Any unauthorised vehicles passing through the gates during their operating times will receive a penalty charge notice.”

It also means changes to parking spaces, waiting and loading restrictions, new loading bays, widening the footpaths and relocating some bus stops and shelters.
