Northampton multi-storey car park could be extended by 350 spaces

Northampton Borough Council hope to almost double St John’s car park by adding an extra 350 spaces. This would provide parking to the town centre, the Cultural Quarter, the planned new University of Northampton Waterside Campus and the Enterprise Zone, a recent news report in the local media was able to reveal.

However, in order to do so, they’ll first have to purchase Albion House, a privately-owned building adjacent to St John’s on Victoria Promenade, which is currently up for sale and the borough council is proposing to buy it for £500,000.

Cllr Tim Hadland, Cabinet member for Planning, Regeneration and Enterprise at Northampton Borough Council, said: “We have plenty of parking capacity in our car parks but the focus of the town centre is changing and the spaces are not necessarily all the locations where people want to park. We have also lost a small number of spaces in Albion Place, where a very outdated surface car park was blocking an important development site.

“Buying Albion House will give us a strategic opportunity to continue to shape this increasingly important part of the town in a way that is consistent with other developments, and to extend one of our most popular and modern multi-storey car parks.”
