Pontypridd railway station to undergo £10m revamp

product-glass-turn Pontypridd railway station to undergo £10m revampNetwork Rail is set to reveal finals plans for a £10 million improvement scheme at Pontypridd railway station during a public information drop-in event for Pontypridd residents and local businesses, who are being encouraged to come and view the plans and meet the teams who will be revamping the station over the coming year.

The £10.7m project will involve the installation of a new bay platform and passing loop to enable more trains to serve the Pontypridd to Cardiff line, a news report in the local media has revealed.

Additionally, as part of a package of works funded under the ‘Wales Station Improvement Programme’ will see the station forecourt, entrance and platforms transformed and improved lighting, CCTV and customer information screens installed.

As part of the works, the original station entrance will be re-commissioned and will create a grand gateway to the station, sheltered by a new canopy.

Access will be improved with a new footbridge and lifts to help passengers cross more easily between platforms, as well as a new lift to take passengers from street level to the platform concourse.

The Welsh Government will be contributing £5.1m towards the programme, while Network Rail will be providing £0.7m and Arriva Trains Wales £0.4m.

Mark Langman, Network Rail’s Wales route managing director, said: “The aim of the scheme is to revamp the station environment at Pontypridd by making noticeable and lasting improvements for the benefit of passengers.

“As well as creating an impressive new entrance, the scheme will provide a step and obstacle-free, accessible route for all, from the station entrance to the platforms. Step-free access not only benefits those with reduced mobility, but also people with children, heavy luggage or shopping, and some more elderly people.

“In the longer term, revitalising the station and improving the gateway to the town may also act as a catalyst for further regeneration in the area.”
