Pub giant JD Wetherspoon has applied for planning permission to have several bollards installed in front of its Grade II-listed city centre location, in order to stop street drinkers congregating outside and causing a nuisance, a news report in the local media has recently revealed.
The company made the application after receiving multiple complaints that drinkers sit on the windowsills outside the Reginald Mitchell, in Hanley, turning customers away. By installing the bollards, the pub will ensure punters only consume alcohol in designated drinking areas.
Doug Wardle, chairman of the City Centre Partnership, has welcomed the proposals. He said: "I am aware of the issues around that area and I think that if businesses are being affected and customers feel intimidated then something needs to be introduced to stop it from happening.
“We need to do what we can to enhance the city centre and make visitors feel safer in our city."
