A large number of disgruntled shoppers in Barrow have joined a group to protest against a parking system that has penalized quite a few of them for simply parking outside a store before its actual opening hours, a news report in the local media has revealed.
Apparently, numerous motorists have been slapped with parking charge notices wanting £100 because they have arrived at The Range site outside its store opening hours (sometimes, having been on the site for just under or over 10 minutes).
Ray Guselli, a Conservative member for Barrow Borough Council’s Roosecote ward and an administrator for the campaign page, said: “The action taken by The Range has been to adopt a blanket policy, whereby many genuine customers are caught by a parking policy which fails to identify genuine shoppers and financially penalises Range customers.
“Many people who go to the shop – perhaps just before it has opened, or just after it has closed – are believing it to be still open. In doing so, they unsuspectingly fall foul of the parking policy and receive a notice from ParkingEye.
“If The Range does not want people on its car park when the store is closed it should have an automatic barrier to close the entrance.” he concluded.
The Range said the parking system was introduced as the car park was being used by people shopping elsewhere and because of anti-social behaviour outside of opening hours.
