Despite recording a serious increase in traffic following the re-opening of the Olympia pool site, the management team at the Dundee Gallagher Retail Park have decided to keep their car park free of charge, at least for the time being.
According to a news report in the local media, the Retail Park’s bosses believe the situation remains “tolerable” despite an increase in traffic due to the new leisure facility.
Another obvious reason is that, by setting up an access charge, there’s a clear and present danger of actually alienating customers.
The Retail Park currently offers two hours’ free parking, and can become busy in the middle of the day or at peak times.
The Olympia pool site, adjacent to the Retail Park, charges significantly more for access to its private car park, and for this reason, visitors prefer to use the retail park’s free parking instead. The leisure facility saw a wave of visitors in its first month of opening, with more than 40,000 people visiting it since its re-opening.
Although the retail park’s management has decided to continue offering free access to the car park, the truth of the matter is that they might change their mind at some point, and implement a ticketing system (perhaps even one featuring a gate/barrier).
