Bollards installed around the Goldington Green park in Bedford, Bedfordshire, didn’t prove to be strong enough in order to prevent a family of travellers from ripping them out and setting up camp there, a news report in the local media reveals.
Bedford Borough Council installed the bollards around the green years ago following a spate of illegal encampments, one of which was collapsible but locked with a key, in order to grant maintenance crews access to the area. And, unfortunately, that was exactly the bollard targeted by the travellers, that ultimately granted them free access to the field.
In the mean time, the travellers have been evicted and a new, stronger bollard has been put in place.
owever, this sort of problem can and will affect other areas around the country as well, so perhaps it’s about time for more councils to consider placing secure bollards around the areas they want protected against unauthorised access.
