Police said two contractors used their position to help steal 3,500 tonnes of rail worth up to £1.5 million. John Burtenshaw and Terence Doherty, who both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal, were part of a gang who stole material while upgrade work was being carried out by Network Rail on the West Coast Mainline. Burtenshaw was this week jailed for two years and nine months and Doherty for two years and six months.
