Insurers dealing with one small diocese alone have received 80 claims after lead was stolen from churches. The diocese of Lichfield in the Midlands rates the third highest number of claims nationally. Specialist church insurer Ecclesiastical said 2011 was the worst on record for the number of metal theft claims made by churches. In that year more than 2,500 claims were made, beating the previous highest figure of approximately 2,400 in 2008.
