Car park barriers planned to stop abuse of hospital’s free car park

Car park barriers could soon be deployed in Tewkesbury Community Hospital’s car park in order to prevent drivers from abusing the system, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust, which manages the Barton Road facility, has applied to the borough council for planning permission for three vehicle control barriers to be put into place in the car park.

The intention is to put them in at three locations, one close to the main entrance and two at the other end of the site, near Howells Road.

The move follows reports of patients having to walk to the hospital because all the spaces in its free car park have been full. Staff have witnessed some selfish motorists parking there and walking into the town centre to work or shop.

The barriers, if they are approved by the council, will rise when a member of the public takes a ticket. That ticket will raise the exit barrier for 10 minutes.

This will give a period of grace, for motorists dropping someone off, picking someone up or wanting to leave the car park if there are no available spaces.

Hospital bosses say the new system will still mean that parking is free.

They add that there will be a separate barrier entry system for ambulances and delivery vehicles and that signs and road marking will provide clear instructions.
